Neon Genesis Evangelion (NGE for short) is an anime that people either love or hate, for reasons that I believe are justified in part. As someone who loves the original anime I will openly admit I might be a bit bias and I think that’s something I should say before I continue this, but even I see a lot of the reasoning behind people’s bad blood towards the show. The show focuses on Shinji Ikari, a young boy who is forced to pilot a giant robot known as Evangelion Unit One as Tokyo is being attacked giant monsters known as Angels. As the show goes on, Shinji becomes increasingly manipulated by his father and the paramilitary organisation known as Nerv who ultimately work towards the completion of the Human Instrumentality Project, a project with the sole purpose of advancing the human race. Soon he finds himself meeting characters like Misato, Asuka and Rei, all who have their own psychological trauma, just like him. It may sound like a weird concept, but then again, Hellsing was about Nazi vampires fighting fundamentalist Vatican exorcists, but anyway, that’s a different story. The main problem that the show has is the fact that it expects you to analyse it as an in depth text, however even while some of the stuff you can find is rather interesting and serves to benefit the plot and characters immensely, the job of the viewer is not to do this.
The viewer’s only responsibility when watching any show/anime is to simply watch. It’s the job of the writers to make sure that the show is somewhat coherent enough at face value to be interesting, and while I think that same face value is still interesting to an extent, I can wholly understand when people grow frustrated by the fact that at around the 20 episode mark the viewer has been given so many questions and different concepts about Nerv, the Evangelion etc. But really they’ve been given little to no answers.

This problem is somewhat rectified if you go into the various communities that speculate and dissect the various components of NGE, but again, the majority of people don’t do that. While at least in my opinion this level of complexity is something that I can deal with as a viewer (As a matter of fact it got me even more interested in NGE), we then have the problem with ending. To say the ending to the anime portrayal of NGE is a monumental display of WTF was that is somewhat of a large understatement. For those in the anime community that have somehow avoided watching NGE, I’ll give you a brief summary of why it was so polarising. You have a show that was about giant robots at times fighting even bigger monsters, a very distinct direction that the show was going in and characters that at the very least you had an idea where they would end up, and then after having watched approximately 480 minutes of those characters and plot, it takes everything and turns it on it’s head. Usually that doesn’t sound too bad because it is also the writer’s job to make sure that the show is new and interesting, but NGE does it in such a way that is so out there it doesn’t even make sense, and given how even Hideaki Anno (The creator of NGE) stated this was caused by budget cuts, the ending overall just feels rushed. Perhaps if the show had more time to fully explain the ending it wouldn’t have been so convoluted, but that wasn’t what the audience was given.
